PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) is the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment to ensure it remains safe for use. This Level 3 qualification teaches the statutory requirements, testing procedures, and documentation required for professional PAT testing.

What qualifications do I need for the PAT testing course?

You must have Initial Verification and 18th Edition (BS 7671) qualifications. You must be at least 16 years old with basic literacy and numeracy skills. There are no other formal entry requirements.

How is the PAT testing course assessed?

Assessment consists of an on-screen open book examination and a practical assessment where you demonstrate your inspection and testing skills. You'll need the IET Code of Practice for PAT Testing (5th Edition) during the assessment.

LEVEL 3 AWARD IN THE IN-SERVICE INSPECTION & TESTING OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

The skills and knowledge required to carry out the in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment. This Award has one unit which covers: statutory and non-statutory requirements, electrical units, equipment construction, inspection and testing theory, practical inspection and testing of equipment and completion of documentation.
The award follows the industry-recognised IET (IEE) Code of Practice published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. It provides a facility for individuals to develop and enhance their knowledge and skills in order they can inspect electrical equipment which is “in-service”.

Course Content

The qualification is achieved when the unit assessments have been successfully completed. The centre will then be able to apply for the learner’s certificate.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 16 years old. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, learners must have the potential to achieve all aspects of the qualification. Learners should be able to demonstrate that they have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy required for the completion of the learning outcomes and the assessment.
